Live! From The Cotton Club 1967
Lubbock, Texas
1967 (reissue)This
is a rare recording of the goings on in a west Texas dance hall in the
1960's while Tommy and Charlene Hancock were raising their family, exploring
counter culture and playing music professionally.
Recorded at the Cotton Club near Lubbock Texas this recording captures an
era gone by and provides a glimpse of things that were to come. Tommy
Hancock was in the house band in the 1940's and 50's and rebuilt the club
when it burned in the 1960's. Touring bands from Bob Wills to Little Richard
- Lefty Frizzell to Elvis Presley - Porter Wagoner to Stevie Ray Vaughan
made this dance club famous. Also included is an interview with Tommy
Hancock at the Buddy Holly Symposium in 2001. He speaks of his memories of
the music scene around Lubbock beginning in the 1940's.

BOOK
Tommy X Hancock
Copyright © 1998 Tommy X Hancock
The Book on Dancing: Zen and the Art of the Texas Two-Step
Tommy Hancock, known to some
as a music legend and to others as a spiritual seer, combines base and basic
- honky-tonk mentality and natural human thirst for enlightenment - with
humor and grace through dance.
When Tommy X Hancock quit playing fiddle and bandleading he "changed art
forms and began dancing". This book includes his perspective as a musician,
male audience member and, most importantly, a free spirit.
If you know anything about the band in any of its incarnations, you know
that the dance is the thing. The ultimate honor you can give to a band is to
feel the music in your body and let it move you. Tommy X Hancock has laid
bare the obstacles to participation by educating the...shall we
say..."unmoved" to the joy of the dance. He does it by revealing the
simplicity of the act and suggesting the underlying motivations (which are
vast). Needless to say it becomes clear that we all have a reason to skittle
across the floor once in a while if not everyday. Since, in general, women
are more willing to dance without provocation (and because you write what
you know), this book is written to men, but women will also find it
useful...or at least amusing. This makes a great gift with a couple of CDs. |
